Following Baboons

I'm sorry to say, but it will be either feast or famine with me. I'll try to write frequently, but the baboons have kept me busy this week. You would think that following 100+ baboons would be a cinch. Well, some times it is. They are really noisy. I should upload some baboon vocalizations for you to hear, but I'm sure you can find them yourself. The males make this really loud call "WAHOO!" It's used in many different circumstances. Perhaps I'll talk about that another time. The females usually scream, because some male is chasing her or they make a strange copulatory call "Ughhhh". Sorry I'm not sure how to write that sound phonetically. Anyway, baboons are noisy. If you can hear them you can follow then. But sometimes you can't hear them. Well, then you have to revert back to "Finding Baboons". Once you see their scat (poop), food remains or tracks - you know you're on the right track. You look over the ridge and there they are. Problem is, I'm not a baboon. Baboons are way more agile and sure footed than humans could ever hope to be. My son says, "spidey mans got nothing on baboons". Some days they move in ways I can't and I just have to say so long. Other days I'm sitting with a small group and they have slowly moved off. Poof... How can you lose 100 baboons? Well I'm here to say that it is possible, but it didn't happen today. We walked up hill, down hill, through ravines, under felled trees - whew, after 10 hours and probably 15km, I'm tired. I saw a big male lying in the grass, I think they just might be tired too. You can't find & follow baboons 7 days a week or you'll wear yourself out. Tomorrow is my day of rest - nobody better ask me to go hiking!

  1. Aw man! I really wanted to go for a nice long hike, too! :-) That is so cool that you can tell so much from their tracks. 10 hours of hiking/walking/tracking...I'd never make it. At least not in the shape I'm in now!
